This 1991 Camaro is one of only 32 factory built showroom stock racecars built for the Canadian GM Motorsport/Players Challenge racing series. This car was campaigned in the ‘91 and ‘92 seasons with one win, three top 5s, and a pole position, ultimately finishing third in the ‘92 east/west shootout driven by Trevor Seibert and Barrie Ihaksi. It has the R7U (Players Series car) and 1LE RPO codes making it first of 32 built that year at the factory specifically for the series. I also have an extensive package of documentation and photos to authenticate the car. These were factory built racecars and not available to the public. The car was later stripped of its race components post-1992 and transformed into a street car, only to be rediscovered at a garage sale in 2001. (There is a very colourful ‘back story’ about this period. – ask me!) Apparently the car came very close to being scrapped so that the engine could be used in a ’55 Chevy project. Luckily that didn’t happen!
The car is still running the factory hand-built and dynoed race engine and transmission from the ‘92 season (305 cubic inch with 5 speed). Included is a replica engine PROM like the ones used in the race series and the side exhaust is also an exact replica of the one provided by GM to the original teams. The livery is from the ‘92 season.
Check out these You Tube videos of the car in action during Round 3 at Race City Calgary (here) and the East/West Shootout at Mosport (here) in the 1992 season.
Modifications for racing include full welded roll cage, Koni Sport dampers all around, polyurethane suspension bushings, steel braided brake hoses, gauge panel with Speedhut gauges, aluminum radiator and shroud with Spal electric fans, canton road race oil pan, racing seat and schroth harness, engine kill switch, fire suppression system, aluminum driveshaft, front and rear tow points, fireproof shifter boot, and quick release steering wheel, and AIM Solo 2 mount. Stock items that were removed and saved include the drivers seat, steering wheel, gauge cluster, etc.
The following maintenance items have been completed recently: new injectors, fuel rail o-rings replaced, new fuel pressure regulator, engine sensors replaced (MAP, TPS, coolant and air temp, EGR valve), spark plugs, wires, cap, rotor, new front calipers, rebuilt rear calipers, all new brake lines front to back, new master cylinder, brake fluid flushed and engine oil changed after every track event, new rotors, brand new Hawk HP Plus brake pads all around, fuel pump, engine belts, axle bearings, power steering pump hoses, all fluids changed, suspension and rear end taken off and painted, new ball joints, tie rods, sway bar links, new polyurethane bushings, new water pump, cooling system drained and flushed every year.
The extensive spares package includes: two extra sets of white painted wheels (one set with used Toyo R888Rs and one with brand new Pirelli Trofeo Rs). The tires on the car are well-used BFG Sport Comp 2s; a complete, partially disassembled 305 (The plan was to build and replace the original race engine to preserve it); a complete T5 trans with clutch and short throw shifter; a nine bolt rear modified for use in a 3rd gen.
I also bought a complete car and disassembled it for parts. So there are doors, fenders, bumpers, several sets of side skirts, tons of bolts, a full interior, dash, whole wiring harness, suspension … basically a whole cars worth of parts! There are also lots of other odds and ends such as Delrin bushings, oil pump, new water pump, spare engine sensors, engine belts, brake calipers, tail lights, new brake pads, oil and air filters, etc.
The odometer shows 2,900kms on a swapped GPS speedometer, while the body, although not flawless, attests to its history as a true racecar. This car is still used as a track car and was prepared as such. It is also registered, insured, and driven on the street. Don’t miss this chance to own a piece of Canadian racing history!
The car is located in Fruitvale, B.C., with delivery options available within B.C. and Alberta at an additional cost.
Price: Asking $30,000 for the car and the comprehensive spares package.
